Bonnet, CHARLES

LL.D., 1720-1793. Swi naturalist. He studied principally Insects and the leaves of plants, until failing eyesight allowed only of speculative work. He opposed the theory of epigenesis, believing that all the germs of living beings were once for all created in a continuous scale, so that all animate nature is, as it were, one organism, and all parts advance together toward perfection. All living forms are immortal, and live on succe ively higher planes, so that at death only a coarser body is dropped off to allow the germ of a more re fined one to develop. He discovered parthenogenesis in Aphids.
