William, the painter and satirical artist, was born in London in 1607, and apprenticed to silversmith, but in 1720 he began painting portraits. His celebrated series of pictures called The Harlot's Progre brought his powers before the public. Several portraits, notably those of himself, Garrick, Lovat, and Wilkes, are masterpieces in their way. For originality of imagination and dramatic power, he stands in the highest rank.
