Harrington, Mark

WALROD, astronomer and meteorologist; born at Sycamore, Ill., Aug. 18, 1848; educated at Evanston, Ill., and the University of Michigan; graduate from the latter in 1868, and became a teacher in that institution; was a istant in the U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey of Alaska (1870-71); profe or of astronomy and director of the observatory at the University of Michigan (1879-91). He founded The American Meteorological Journal, in 1884; was its managing editor until 1892; became chief of the U. S. Weather Bureau at Washington, in 1891, holding that position until 1895, and was the same year appointed vice-president of the International Meteorological Conference at Munich.
