Orchard-grass

The space, in theatres, between the stage and the seats of the spectators; appropriated by the Greeks to the chorus and the musicians; by the Romans, to the magistrates and senators, and by the moderns, to the musicians. The word is also used to denote any erection for the performers of a concert, or any instrumental band performing together in modern concerts, operas, or sacred music. [s. 666]
