(Edinburgh University, 1875), Congregationalist; b. at Nails worth, Gloucestershire, Eng., Dec. 19, 1823; studied at Coward College and University College, London graduated at London University, B. A., 1843; was mi ionary of London Mi ionary Society in China, 1848-80; translator of scientific and other books into the Chinese language, in the Chinese Imperial Maritime Customs service, 1880-85. He was a member of the committee for translating the New Testament into Chinese. He is the author of the following works in Chinese: Refutation 76 of the Principal Errors of Buddhism; General View of Western Knowledge, 1885; sixteen scientific and historical primers rendered into Chinese.
