BEVEL AND, SOUTH

(51° 27’ N., 3° 52’ K.), island, Holland. (1862), an American legislator, b. in Adams County, Ohio. As a youth he endured great hardship, being a plowboy at 12, a railroad laborer, a logger and a teamster before 15, but during this period taught himself and later managed to enter De Pauw University, graduating in 1885. Two years later he was admitted to the bar and began to practice in Indianapolis. He was elected on the Republican ticket to the state a ny aba then to the U.S. Senate, where he served during the terms of 1899-1905 and 1905-11.
