Ceres

(sē'rěz.) [ L.] (Myt.) The daughter of Saturn and Vesta, and tutelary godde of corn and agriculture. She corresponds with Isis in the Egyptian, and with Demeter in the Greek mythology. By Jupiter she became the mother of the godde Proser pine, and she is portrayed as garlanded with ears of grain, holding in one hand alighted torch, and in the other her sacred emblem the poppy. In her honor the Romans celebrated the festivals called Cereal i a, q. v.(Ast.) One of the minor planets or Asteroids, q. v., and the first that was discovered, Jan. 1, 1801. [s. 160]
