denotes the enlargement of an organ beyond the normal limits. Hypertrophy is usually poere in its effect; thus if one kidney be destroyed y disease, the healthy kidney frequently undergoes hypertrophy, and is thus enabled to do as much work as that normally performed by both kidneys together.
