Dictionary of Battles · 1904 · p. 3
Fought August B.C. 338 between the Maced on i ans under Philip, and the A then i ans and The bans under Chares and The a genes respectively. Philip had 30,000 foot and 2,000 horse, the latter led by Alexander, then a lad of eighteen; the allies were slightly fewer in number. Philip reinforced his right wing, which was opposed by the A then i ans, and sent his heavy cavalry against the The bans, on the allied right. Their charge broke the Theban ranks, and they then attacked the A then i ans in flank and rear. A hopele rout ensued, the Theban "Sacred Band" dying where they stood. The A then i ans lost 6,000 killed and 2,000 prisoners. The The bans were almost annihilated.
