CLINTON, JAMES

(173€-1812), a soldier of the American Revolution, the brother of George and the father of De Witt Clinton, b. in Little Britain, Quebec, during the war against the French, in 1775. During the Revolution he held a commi ion as colonel in the Continental Army, later becoming a brigadier-general. He was in command of Fort Clinton, when captured by the) British, on which occasion he was severely wounded. In 1779 he served under Sullivan against the Indians.
