i. [Sw. dial. por a, pur a, para to work steadily.] To look steadily and with continued attention and application; to read, examine, or study patiently, steadily, and persistently. Applied to patient and steady study of a book, or anything written or engraved, and followed by on, upon, or over (now generally only by the last of these).
