—In higher mathematics, one of a cla of artificial numbers, devised by Napier (A. D. 1600), to abridge arithmetical calculations, and by the use of carefully prepared “Tables of Logarithms, ” to shorten the difficult operations of raising to powers and the extraction of roots.
