ben′tham-izm, n. a name applied to the social and political doctrines of Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832), whose leading principle is the doctrine of utility, that happine is identical with pleasure, summed up in Priest ley's famous phrase, 'the greatest happine of the greatest number.'
