An instrument used with smoothbore siege howitzers to steady the shell in the pa age down the bore. The fixed iron band which cro es the hollow hemisphere of the loader has a hole in it which embraces the fuse, and which on reaching the bottom of the bore can be easily disengaged. j. — The weight carried by an aerofoil. It is usually expre ed in pounds per square foot of superficial area. … Bar. — A bar used to carry shot, by pa ing it through the ring of the shell-hooks. It is also called carrying-bar. "Loading Platform. In artillery, that piece. surface upon which the cannoneers stand —while loading the Loading Side of a Gun. — The side of the grooves of a gun by which a projectile pa es down the bore of a rifled gun from the muzzle. The studs of the shot pre against this side when being loaded, but on being forced out by the explosion of the charge, they pre against the other side, termed the driving side.
