Haarlem

City of the Netherlands, 10 m. w. of Amsterdam; noted for its trade in flower roots and for its cathedral, said to contain the largest and finest organ in the world. It suffered from a great fire 1493, and from the plague in 1509; was taken by Alva after 7 months' siege, July 1573, and many of the inhabitants butchered; was inundated 1775 and 1791. Pop., 1891, 53,692.
