Charlea II

(1630-1685), King of Great Britain from 1660 to 1685, was displeased with the independent spirit of New England, and in 1664 sent four royal commi ioners, Nicolls, Carr, Cartwright and Maverick, who should correct abuses in those colonies. He was especially displeased with the treatment of the Quakers by Ma achusetts. He granted liberal charters to Connecticut and Rhode Island, 1662-63. In 1664 he claimed and took po e ion of New Nether land. In 1670 he chartered the Hudson Bay Company. In 1673 he reaffirmed Carteret’s + New Jersey charter. In 1681 he granted Pennsylvania to William Penn, giving him a proprietary grant of 40,000 square miles, In 1684 he revoked the charter of Ma achusetts.
