charbon (sharbon)

[F., lit. a coal: see carbon.] 1. A little black spot or mark remaining after the large spot in the cavity of the corner-tooth of a horse is gone.-2. In pathol., anthrax; malignant pustule. Charbon de garance, a substance obtained from madder by heating it with strong sulphuric acid, converting it into a black ma , which on being heated yields a sublimate of orange crystals of alizarin.
