(pl.): A name sometimes applied to the followers of Robert Owen (1771-1858), a noted socialist and philanthropist, whose industrial community at New Lanark, on the Clyde, excited great attention in the early part of this century. Meeting with opposition from the clergy, he came to this country, and in 1824 founded a similar colony in Indiana, where the cooperative system was introduced, and a modified communism adopted.
