Senate

sen'at, n. An a embly or council of citizens distinguished by birth, dignities, wealth, influence, etc., and invested with a share in the government. (Anc. Rome.) A body of elders chosen from the noble* of the nation, and having supreme legislative authority. The upper or le numerous branch of a legislature in various countries, as in France and the U. S.; a legislative body; state council.
