re-trench', v. t. [-trenched (-trenchf), -trenching] To cut off, pare away; to abridge, curtail. (Mil.') To furnish with a retrenchment.—v. i. To live at le expense.— Retrenchment, n. Act of retrenching or of lopping off; removal what is superfluous; act of le ening or abridging. (Mil.) A work constructed within another, long partial po e ion of the fortre when emy has gained po e ion, or to protect the defenders till they can retreat or obtain a capitulation.
