Lat. pin (us); suff. -ite.] Chem.: C6H12O10. A saccharine substance extracted by water from the sap of the Pinus lamber tian a of California. It forms radio-crystalline nodulos, specific gravity 1:52, is sweet as sugar-candy, soluble in water, insoluble in absolute alcohol. It is dextro-rotatory, unfermentable, and has no copper-reducing power. pi-ni-tēş, s . [Lat. pin (us); suff. -ites.] Palæobot.: A genus of Coniferse, allied to Pinus. Range from the Carboniferous to the Miocene. Known species thirty-five, of which nineteen are Cretaceous. [AMBER.]
