Cocȳtus

, a river of Epirus. The word is derived from κωκυειν , to weep and to lament . Its etymology, the unwholesomene of its water, and above all, its vicinity to the Acheron, have made the poets call it one of the rivers of hell, hence Cocytia virgo , applied to Alecto, one of the furies.
