(sa-goor',) the patronymic of a noble French house, which produced: LOUIS PHILIPPE, COMTE DE S., an eminent diplomatist, B. in Paris, 1753. He served under Rochambeau in the war of the American Revolution, and afterwards performed diplomatic mi ions to St. Petersburg and Berlin. In 1803 he entered the French Academy. D. 1830. Among other works, he wrote Memoirs, Souvenirs, and Anecdotes (3 vols., 1824), abo ok which had a great succe .- His son, PHILIPPE PAUL, B. in Paris in 1780, became also distinguished in diplomacy, and served as general on Napoléon's staff in the Ru ian campaign. In 1830 he became a member of the Academy. He was author of a History of Napoléon and the Grand Army in 1812, and an excellent History of Ru ia and Peter the Great. [s. 811]
