RUSTIC

(Lat. rus.) In Architecture, a term applied to work jagged out into an irregular surface. Work also which is left rough, without tooling. RUTACEvE. (Ruta, one of the genera.) A natural order of plants, composed principally of trees and shrubs inhabiting the warmer parts of the world, seldom of herbaceous plants. The species arc sometimes very ornamental, especially those belonging to the genera Correa, Boronia, and Diosma. Some, as the common rue, thn bucku plant, , are remarkable for having a powerful, peculiar, unpleasant odour, and antispasmodic quality; and a {ew have a febrifugal bark. The JJictamnus albue or Fraxinel'a, is extremely fragrant, and gives off an in flammable vapour. [s. 1092]
