FAR EASTERN DEMOCRATIC RE

PUBLIC, a republic established in the southern part of Siberia from Lake Baikal east to the Sea of Okhotsk on the Japan Sea. It has an area of about 650,000 square miles and includes the former provinces of Transbaikalia Amur and a maritime province. On the south are Mongolia and Manchuria. In spite of demands on the part of Japan to prevent the continued existence of the republic, it persisted. It is governed by a commi ion of seven, elected by the national a embly of about 400. Both men and women have the suffrage. Education is free and compulsory. The republic came, in 1922, under the influence of the Soviet government of Ru ia. The capital is Chita, and the chief commercial city is Vladivostok. market town and watering-place, Hamp-— shire, England, on Portsmouth Harbor; earthenware. Pop. 10,000.
