pl. FIELD-MICE. (Zool.) The common name of Arvicola, a gen. of rodent animals, fam. Muridæ, characterized by small size, soles naked anteriorly, tail rather short, cylindrical, and hairy. This gen.is represented in the U. States by more than 20 species. Field of the Cloth of Gold. (Hist.) The title given to the scene of the interview held between Henry VIII. of England, and Francis I. of France, near Calais, June 7-24, 1520: - so named on account of the extraordinary pomp and magnificence displayed on both sides on the occasion.
