DE, archdeacon of Maguelone, was sent, at the commencement of the 13th century, by Innocent III., into the S. of France as legate extraordinary, in order to search out the heretic Albigenses, and deliver them over to the secular arm. He was met by a determined resistance, and was at last slain in the territory of Raymond, Count of Toulouse. This murder led to the excommunication of Raymond, and also to the war of the Albigenses. D. 1208. Castelnau'dary, a town of France, dep. Aude, 21 m. W.N.W. of Car cas sonne, celebrated for its numerous wind-mills; pop . 10,542.
