Samuel Adjai, the first — bishop of the Church of England; was born in Yoruba, He was carried into slavery in 1821, but was freed, with a large company of his countrymen, by a British man-of-war in 1822, and landed at Sierra-Leone, where he had the advantages of a school and soon became an excellent scholar. He finished his education in — pm and accompanied the first and second Niger expeditions. In 1864 he was ordained Bishop of the Niger. He died in 1891., Croydon, a borough of England in County Surrey, ten miles south of London. It isa _ of ancient origin. Of special interest are the remains of the ancient palace, long a residence of the archbishops of Canterbury. Pop. (1901) 183,885.
