(al-lah-man'dah.) (Bot.) A gen. of tropical evergreen climbers, O. Apocynaceӕ, remarkable for handsome flowering plants, with deleterious qualities. A. Cathartic a is a valuable purgative. Allan, SIR WILLIAM, a British historical painter, B. in Edinburgh, 1782; was President of the Royal Scottish Academy from 1838 until his death in 1850. His principal works are: the Circa ian Captives; the Slave Market at Constantinople; and the Battle of Waterloo. [s. 21]
