in the army and navy date from the middle of the 17th century. Charles I. struck both gold and silver medals in 1643, a gold one specially for Robert Welch for gallantry at Edge hill; and the Parliamentary officers at Naseby were certainly ‘ decorated,' as were both officers and men who served at Dunbar. The ^Victoria Cro ' (g.v.) was instituted in 1856.
