[Eng. news, and letter.] The name given to the little printed sheets or letters, i ued weekly in the early part of the seventeenth century, the news for which was collected by the news writers in the coffee-houses. Originally they were literally letters of news written by profe ional news writers, and sent by them to their em ployers weekly. "The first newsletter from London was laid on the table of the only coffee-room in Cambridge."-Macaulay: Hist. Eng ., ch. iii. The name is still retained in a few instances as the title of a newspaper.
