HUME

David, the historian and philosopher, was bom in 1711. The first volume of his “History of England " appeared in 1754, and the last in 1761, when it was recognized as a standard work. He brought Rou eau to England in 1766, but the latter’s morbid sensitivene lea to disagreement. In 1767 became Secretary-of-State, and in* 1769 he retired to Edinburgh. He died in 1776. Adam Smith was his pupil in Glasgow, and owed many of his most brilliant ideas to him.
