Daughter of Maria The res a; wife of Louis XVI.; victim of a false position and of outrageous slanders, as in the matter of the DIAMOND NECKLACE (q.v.) 1785. Her unpopularity helped to overthrow the throne, and after months of imprisonment and a frightful trial she was guillotined.
