MELCHIOR, D.D., 1711-1787. German patriarch of American Luther an ism. He emigrated 1742, and organized the Pa. Synod 1748. Autobiog., pub. 1886.-Two of his sons left the ministry to serve their country. JOHN PETER GABRIEL, 1746-1807, was a general in the Revolutionary War, thrice M. C., and U. S. Senator 1801-2.-FREDERICK AUGUST US, 1750-1801, was M. C. 1789-97, and twice Speaker of the House. A third, GOTTHILF HENRY ERNEST, 1753-1815, was Luther an minister at Lancaster, Pa., from 1779, and wrote Catalog us plant arum Americæ septentrional is, 1813; Descrip tio uberior graminum et plant arum calamari arum, 1817.
