Canterbury 1865–8; contested Norwich 1870, M.P. 1874–5; counsel to the admiralty and judge advocate of the Fleet Nov. 1865 to 22 Feb. 1875; serjeant at law and justice of court of common pleas 22 Feb. 1875, transferred to court of exchequer 12 May 1875; knighted at Windsor castle 13 May 1875; created the last baron of the exchequer; judge of queen’s bench division of high court of justice 26 Feb. 1881; tried the libel action Belt v. Lawes lasting 43 days 1881–2; entertained by the French bar in Paris 1868. d. 43 Ennismore gardens, South Kensington 5 Dec. 1890, cremated at Woking 12 Dec.
