Acherontia (ak-e-ron's hi-ä), n. [NL., Ἀχερόντιος, pertaining to Acheron: see Acheron.] A genus of nocturnal lepidopterous insects, of the family Sphingid a. A. atropos is the death's head moth, or death's-head hawk-moth. See death's-head. A cher ontic (ak-e-ron'tik), a. [L. A cher ontic us, Acheron or the infernal regions; dark; gloomy: as, A cher ontic mists.
