t. [Fr. malt ratter, from Lat. male =badly, ill, and tracto =to handle, to treat; Ital. mal tratt are.] To treat badly or roughly; to illuse, to abuse. "It was a little hard to maltreat him after."- Sterne : Tristram Shandy , vol. ii., ch. xvii. fate, făt, färe, amidst, what, fall, Ornith .: The typical genus of Gray's sub-family Maluringe. All the species are from Australia or Tasmania. The males are distinguished by brilliant plumage. Malurus is included in the Linnsean genus Motacilla (q. v.).
