guaiaconic (as gwayaconic)

[Eng., ., guaiac ( um ), and- onic.] (See the compound.) guaiaconic-acid, s. Chem.: C19H20O5. Contained in the mother liquid obtained in the preparation of guaiacic acid. The liquid is evaporated to dryne , and the residue treated with boiling alcohol, evaporated, and separated from the resin by means of ether. Guaiaconic acid is amorphous, melting at 100°, and is insoluble in water. It is easily soluble in alcohol, ether, chloroform, and in acetic acid. It is turned blue by oxidizing agents. The calcium and lead salts are insoluble in alcohol.
