[Pref. zantho-, and Eng. phenic.] Containing or derived from phenyl, and yellow in color. 4559 xanthophenic-acid, s. Chem.: A yellow coloring matter of unknown composition, obtained by heating phenol or cresol with arsenic acid. It di olves in water with a golden-yellow color, and in alkalies with a red color, and dyes silk and wool yellow without the aid of mordants.
