GEORGE TOWN

a city of South Carolina, in George town co., of which it is the county seat. It is on the George town and Western railroad, and Winyah Bay. It has an excellent harbor and has considerable commercial importance. It is also the center of an extensive agricultural region. George town is connected with New York, Baltimore and other cities by steamship lines. Its industries include machine shops, foundries, saw mills, a chemical factory, etc. It has a large export trade in rice, turpentine and lumber. ‘There is a public library, post-office, and custom-house.
