Amharic (amharik)

[ Amharic has been since A. D. 1300 the language of the Court and Nobles [of Aby in i a]. R. N. Cust , Mod. Langs. of Africa, p. 88. Amherstia (am-hers'ti-ä), n. [NL., named in honor of Counte Amherst , a zealous promoter of botany.] A leguminous arboreous genus Burmese plants, of a single species, A. nobilis , with very large flowers, bright vermilion spotted with yellow, in long pendulous racemes. The flowers are considered sacred, and are laid as an offering before the shrines of Buddha.
