[Mod. Lat., from Gr. hypo nomeuō = to undermine, to make pa ages under ground. ( Aga iz.)] Entom.: The typical genus of the family Hypo no meu tide (q.v.). Hyponomeuta padellus is common; its larva feeds on hawthorn, the apple, the aloe, ., that of H. evonymellus on the spindle bushes, and that of H. padi on the bird-cherry. hỹ-pô-nô-men-ti-dæ, s. pl. [Med. Lat. hypo no meut(a); Lat. fem. pl. adj. suff. -idœ.] Entom.: A family of Moths, group Tineina. The male has wings of the normal size, the female has hers abbreviated; the antenne rather thick, pubescent, the maxillary palpi undeveloped.
