Spice

[Fr., from E. species. ] A vegetable pro¬ duction, with a strong, sweet smell and sharp taste, used as a seasoning by mixing with food. The chief spices are ginger, cinnamon, nutmegs, cloves, allspice, and pepper (q.v.). Allspice pinento is a native of Jamaica, and is an ever¬ green tree. The berries are dried and much used for flavoring, as they contain the flavor other spices.
