Daquin

(da-kan), Louis Claude, orgt. b. Pans, July 4, 1694; d. there, June 15, 1772. Ripil of March and, orgt at St Antome at age of 12, 1727 won in competition with Rameau position of orgt St. PauTs, which he held till his death; published pieces for harpsichord, Coucou bemg one, a volume of Noels, for the organ or clavichord, and a cantata Daxgomyzski (dar-gO-mizh'-ski), Alexander Sergeivitch, compr pst b in rov. of Toula, Ru ia, Feb. 14, 1813, St. Petersburg, Jan. 29, 1869. Educated m St Petersburg; of good family; for four years m gov’t service, taught as an amateur oy Schoberlechner, and deeply influenced by friendship of Glinka; composed Esmeralda 1839 (prod 1847) and Rou alka 1856, and many beautiful and expre ive songs, after visit to France and Germany became a ociated with Balakirev and New School, of whose doctrines his opera The Stone Guest has been called “The Gosper*; in this work (orchestrated after D’s death by Rimsky-Korsakov and performed 1872) older forms are abandoned entirely for continuous recitative. Though none of his works were especially succe ful, D. is regarded by some as the apostle of a new cult.
