Peebles 22 March 1809; in a printing establishment, Glasgow 1822–9; sub-editor Scottish Guardian 1832, principal editor to 1859; lecturer in natural history in Free Church coll. 1860; his geological and zoological collections were given to the college; sec. of Glasgow Philosophical soc. and editor of its Transactions; edited The Glasgow Sabbath school union magazine 1856; author of Moffat, its walks and wells 1845; Staff a and Iona described and illustrated 1850; Maclure and Mac donald’s Series of guides to the Highlands of Scotland.
