red republican

An extreme republican; one who is ready to fight for his opinions. So called from the red cap worn by the extreme republicans in the first French Revolution to intimate their manumi ion from the tyranny of the aristocrats, in imitation of the Roman practice of placing a red Phrygian cap on the head of a slave when manu mitted.
