(tha’-ér), (1) Alex. Wheelock, South Natick, Ma ., Oct. 22, 1817— Trieste, July 15, 1897; graduated Harvard, 1843; was librarian there for some years; 1849 went to Europe Beethoven; 1362, as journalist; 1854 returned to Germany and frequently afterwards as his means permitted; 1862, U. S. consular agent at Vienna; later, till death, consul at Trieste; besides many articles he wrote a great but life of Beethoven; though written in English it was first pub. in a German trans. by H. Deiters, in 5 vols. (Berlin, 18661908). The English edition, completed by H. E. Krehbiel, was pub. Ig21, under the sponsorship of the (2) A ’n, (Whitney) ¥. (3 vols.). Eugene, N. Mendon, Ma ., 1838—Burlington, Vermont, 1889; organist, editor, lecturer and composer.
