CINCHONA

A genus of rubiaceous trees of the suborder Cinchonece, division Eucinchonece, distinguished by the cylindrical corolla terminating in 5 small horizontally expanded lobes, varying in color from white to bright-red and purple, and fringed at the margin; by the inflorescence disposed in terminal panicles or cymes; and by the dehiscence of the valves of the capsules from the base, the two halves of the capsule remaining attached to their apex by the permanent calyx.
