BROWNING, ROBERT

(1812-89), poet; b. London; s. of Robert B., in the Bank of England; ed. and at University Coll.;. first poem, Pauline, anonyin 1833. Two years later he Para cels us, a long dramatic which met with little succe , found appreciative readers in Carlyle, and other men. In 1837 Mac ready produced: his Str afford, and’ in 1840 Sordello published. | These were followed Bells and Pomegranates, 1841; on the ’Scutcheon, 1843; Lurta, Soul’s Tragedy, 1846. In the latter he married Elizabeth Barrett, and to live in Italy, returning to after his wife’s death in 1861. Men Women appeared, 1855; Dram at is sonoe, 1864; The Ring and the Fifine at the Fair, 1872; Red Nighi-Cap Country, 1873; The Album, 1875; Pac chia rot to, 1876; Saisiaz, 1878; Dramatic Idylls, 80; and /A solan do, 1889, was his death-day.
