Ireland 1791; an original member of Numismatic Society 1836; he devoted his whole life to study of Egyptian antiquities, one of the first Orientalists who made use of astronomy to fix important dates in ancient history; published 174 plates of oriental cylinders or seals from collections in British Museum, in parts 1842–52; author of Pharoah and his Princes in Syro-Egyptian Soc.
